White Parian ware TJ & J Mayer raised Compote with a grapevine design
Decorative footed compote with a wonderful raised relief pattern of vines and grapes, in a wonderful natural matte white finish.
History ~ Produced at the Dale Hall, Longport, which was run 1843 - 1855 by T J & J Mayer, who exhibited at the British Exhibitions of 1851, 1853 and 1855, winning a medal in 1851, which is referred to on the transfer on the base. Therefore produced between 1851 - 1855.
Made from Parian, (which was first produced by Minton in 1845). This was a particular type of biscuit porcelain, which used a significant amount more frit, producing a more vitrified finish than traditional porcelain. The technique was intended to imitate marble, giving a distinctive form, shape and colour to the porcelain. It was named after the Greek island of Paros, which produces finely textured white Parian marble and has been used for centuries to carve sculptures. The additional advantage of this technique was that the liquid solution could be poured into a moulding, thus enabling mass production.
Condition ~ Good antique condition, no chips or cracks. Some very minor scratches to the surface and tiny specs from the firing.
