Very large antique oil painting - Portrait of a Victorian Gentleman
A very large and splendid formal portrait of a distinguished looking gentleman, expertly painted with great attention to the facial features, the skin tone, and the fine details of the beard and moustache. The use of chiaroscuro, light and shadow, around the face and into the background creates a sense of dramatic presence, we feel the formidable status of the sitter. The painting is set within a wonderful gilded wooden frame of a classical design, with a label verso for Mawson, Swan & Morgan, who were prominent fine art framers in Newcastle upon Tyne, (founded in 1878 and who remained in business until 1974).

Condition ~ Good antique condition, one or two small marks to the paint.
