Two 19th century antique slipware Fareham Chimney Pots

Two antique reclaimed red terracotta ornamental chimney pots.  With a unique local history and having acquired a wonderful worn patina, they are distinctive and decorative antiques.

History ~
Fareham Chimney Pots were made, as the name suggests, in Fareham, Hampshire, during the Victorian era and later.  Fareham was known for its high-quality red clay and for the durability and consistent firing quality that this offered. 

Fareham chimney pots are readily identifiable by their distinctive red/orange terracotta, with a cylindrical or slightly tapered shape.  Their design was usually simple and robust rather than ornate, with simple ribbing and unique white slip marks at the top of the pot.  They were not just generic chimney pots, they were individual and rooted in local regional Hampshire craft traditions.  They were seen by the potters who made them as commemorative artifacts, adding to the historic character of a building.

Condition ~
There is some damage to the base of one of the pots, it does not sit level, as shown in the images.  Several parts of the terracotta are worn and there are some chips.  They are practical items and at their age inevitably will have acquired significant wear.  Each of the two chimney pots as been photographed from the front and the back.  They do stand up steady and are sturdy for use.
