Set of 3 framed Victorian botanical prints by James Sowerby
An attractive set of three decorative antique botanical copper plate engravings, each of which has been carefully hand coloured. From left to right the images show - a Buttercup, Knapweed and Yellow Archangel (a member of the mint family). They are detailed botanical studies - showing the roots, leaves and flower structure, and are set within quality mounts and frames, forming a wonderful set of antique decorative items.
History ~ James Sowerby (1757 - 1822) was a prominent British naturalist, botanical illustrator and engraver. Trained at the Royal Academy, he was a pioneer of natural history illustration, combining artistic skill with scientific rigour.
Most notable amongst his works was 'English Botany - Volumes I and II. Volume II was printed in 1799 and it is from this volume that these prints were taken. The illustrations were largely done by Sowerby himself, and the books became a comprehensive visual and textual catalogue of British flora, helping to popularise botany - bringing it into the reach of the general public and amateur naturalists.
