Ridgway & Abington Sylvan smear glazed stoneware Jug

A decorative and attractive moulded stoneware jug, in a soft green-grey colour. Created with an intricate raised design, known as 'Sylvan', this design featured bamboo around the body of the jug, over which is laid an intricately woven grape vine. The jug handle has been designed to represent the twisted branches of the grape vine. The light gloss finish on the jug was achieved by using a smear-glazed finish. This was a technique achieved by adding salt to the inside of the saggars (which were the containers used to hold the vessels being fired) which was vaporised during the firing process.
History ~
Produced by E J Ridgway & Abington, Church Works, Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, the design was registered on 16 February 1849. They ran a successful pottery together, Abington was a skilled carver and modeller who had worked for architects on the decoration of the Bank of England and the Drury Lane Theatre and Leonard Abington was an experienced modeller.
