A rare set of 11 antique ceramic porcelain side or dessert plates. Each piece of this white majolica features a cabbage leaf design, which is offset within a lattice outer edge, finished with a gold rim.
History ~ Produced by Royal Worcester. Judging by the maker's marks on the reverse 5 plates were made in 1884, 1 plate was made in 1903 and the remaining 5 plates were made in 1905. Some plates also have tiny signatures of the individual person that made the plate.
Royal Worcester was founded in 1751 by Dr John Wall, along with a group of other businessmen. It quickly became known for its innovative and unique and pioneering production methods, for example using soapstone as a key raw material and enhanced techniques for transfer printing, receiving its Royal Warrant in 1862. Throughout the second part of the 19th century it became world famous for its production of ornamental porcelain and fine quality tableware, with designs influenced by the Aesthetic Movement and Japanese and Oriental styles. Despite various challenges the company faced in the early 1900s it continued through the twentieth century, but in 2009 it was taken over by the Portmeirion Pottery Group which now produces ceramics under the Royal Worcester name.
