Pair of rustic antique pottery Ginger Jars
£ 120.00
A wonderful pair of rustic antique pottery glazed stoneware ginger jars, with an attractive mottled surface that is unique and characterful - tactile, and with a great deal of decorative appeal.
History ~
Circa 1880 (Quing Dynasty 1644 – 1911).
Chinese ginger jars were first used to store preserving foods, eg salt, herbs and spices such as ginger, which were all rare commodities in the 19th century. The jars were used for exporting these condiments from China to the West.
Many of these pots were discarded after use and buried in Victorian bottle dumps. Nowadays enthusiasts spend hours carefully excavating such sites in order to reclaim these wonderful pots.
Condition ~
These pots come with various firing flaws, there is age related wear and some marking and staining from its years spent underground, and occasional hairline cracks. Each pot is unique in its finish and design and slightly irregular in shape. I have added a few images, if you would like to receive more stills please contact me and I will be happy to provide them.
