A pair of small pottery statutes each with three delightful lambs resting under the canopy of a tree blossoming with flowers. Charming in their simple niaïve style and hand-crafted authentic nature. Originally made to be displayed in pairs on mantle pieces in a parlour.

These figures are a bucolic and idealised example of country life within the genre of bocage pottery. This was a decorative motif and style which took its name from the Old Norman word ‘boscage’ – used to encompass shrubs, undergrowth and thickets of trees. They were used as metaphors - lambs symbolize innocence, trees abundance, nature and rural life - familiar themes in late Georgian and early Victorian middle-class England.
They are made in pearl ware - a process invented in the late 18th century which made earthenware appear brighter and whiter. This was done in order to compete against the popularity of Chinese export porcelain. Pearl ware figures had a traditional led glaze but with a small amount of cobalt oxide added to the process, giving a faint bluish tint to counteract the natural yellowish cast of earthenware and making the earthenware appear whiter and with a closer resemblance to porcelain.
Condition ~
Good antique condition. Each one has slight variations and is asymmetric. There does not appear to be any damage or repairs that I can find. Significant crazing throughout, as shown in the images. There are also minor glaze irregularities and firing imperfections, as expected in the production of early 19th century antique pearl ware.
