Michel de Alvis is a noted French painter whose reputation and legacy for the aesthetic appeal of his decorative paintings continues to be admired. His work is characterised by his incisive and spontaneous painting style, which drew inspiration from both natural landscapes and urban scenes -particularly influenced by his travels around the Mediterranean. De Alviss’ paintings often reflected his surroundings and experiences, capturing the essence of the places he visited with a unique vibrancy and expressive quality. Throughout his artistic career de Alvis returned time and again to painting city buildings and excelled at all still life forms, creating vibrant bustling Mediterranean city scenes. He drew in pencil and ink on paper or cardboard. Then he painted in ink, gouche or oil - sometimes producing a thick outline which distorted reality and added a sense of fluidity and the impression of movement in his paintings. Juxtaposing pure colours reinforced the sense this movement and added even more vibrancy. A Mediterranean city evening certainly came to life with his brush strokes -dynamic combinations of light and colour were further emphasised by graphically drawn building outlines and shapes.
Michel de Alvis paintings are also recognised for their historical and cultural significance – he was part of the evolution of the post-war modern European art movement. Friends with many other artists and a contemporary of the renowned painter Claude Venard?- de Alvis’s style encapsulated the post-war artistic mood, emphasizing both a blend of realism but also expressive freedom – he was both post-Cubist and post-expressionist.
History ~ Michel de Alvis (b. 16 July 1936, Montmarte, Paris - d. October 2019, Paris). Born into the artistic community of Montmarte - de Alvis’ parents were a piano maker and a fashion designer and his childhood was spent surrounded by creative artists and painters. Initially he studied graphic design but then took drawing lessons and focussed on painting. Between 1959 and 2015 de Alvis’ art works were exhibited internationally in France, Spain, Japan, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Switzerland.
There is no signature visible on the painting in its frame, it may be that it is covered by the edge of the frame, which of the period but not original. The painting is referenced verso in a style of hand-writing and characteristic thick black pen than matches de Alvis's signature and is entirely characteristic of his style and is similar to other paintings of his from 1965 and 1966.
Condition ~ There is some flexibility in the canvas, it is not very tight on the frame.
