An adorable black an white antique ceramic rabbit with flat ears. Designed as French terrine dish, full of character and with a wonderful inquisitive face this piece of hand made pottery is a delight. It bears the inscription underneath - “This piece of real earthenware has been entirely made by hand. I offer it to you exclusively. Michel Cougant”
History ~
1950s, France.
Caugant senior had a luxury food shop in Bretagne, France, during the 1930s and was famous for his expertise in charcuterie and for the pâté he made. He used rabbit meat as an alternative to traditional pork and beef terrines, which produced a delicate flavour and smooth texture, quickly gaining popularity among gastronomes and food connoisseurs.
His son, Michel, was born in Quimper in 1931, and started his career as a traditional potter, going on to make animal shaped tureen dishes which were used to sell the most expensive paté in the delicatessen.
Michel himself became world famous for creating these realistic ceramic animal figurines which were so full of character. His attention to detail and the lifelike quality he and his team of artisans were able to add to this handmade pottery set him apart from other artists of his time. His work continued to be inspired by the natural world around him and often featured animals such as cows, pigs, chickens and ducks. He developed a signature style which was characterised by his popular whimsical rabbit motifs.
These tureens remain popular and sought after and are known for their versatility and functionality, whether used as decorative items or as practical serving ware.
