Lega Mask with Beard made by Bwami Society

A decorative wooden face mask, made by the Lega people. It is simply carved with sharp accentuated features and yet it is also slightly abstract and full of expression. Its dark paint has mellowed and acquired a wonderful patina which contrasts with the straggly auburn raffia beard - making this mask a striking decorative antique. Lega masks have become an important part of African art. They are highly sought after for their simplicity, elegance, and deep spiritual and cultural significance.

History ~
The Lega people live in the forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo and parts of Uganda and Rwanda. Masks were an integral part of their traditional culture which governs their social, moral and spiritual life. They were used in important cultural practices such as initiation ceremonies for young men - like those marking the transition from childhood to adulthood. They were often used in dances and performances during which the wearer of the mask takes on the power and authority associated with the figure represented, be it in leadership, community status or behaviour.

This mask dates from between 1900 - 1930.
