Large mid century oil Painting - floral Still Life by Afansy Nikolsky
A wonderful and large oil on canvas - a floral still life showing a glass vase filled to the brim with pink or cream roses and foliage.
Superficially the colours and design are typical of their time, but the painting offers so much more - it shows a talent for celebrating nature and creating a subtle emotional undertone, adding to the visual experience a sense of tranquillity, introspection and serenity. This painting (entitled 'Roses in a Glass Vase') is soft and calming, perfectly balanced and relaxing to behold. There is a good use of light and shadow, emphasised by the partially drawn curtain behind the vase, enabling the artist to add extra contrast and complexity to the composition. It is a skilled and masterful piece detailed by a technically proficient artist, with a meticulous attention for detail, but more importantly by an artist who had the creativity to really bring a work of art to life.
In recent years Afansay Nikolsky's art work has become more and more appreciated and valued.
History ~ Afansy Nikolsky (1909 – 1984)
Afansy Nikolsky was married to Elena Nikolsky (b. 1907 – d.1979) – she was an accomplished sculptress, and initially they lived together in Kiev, Ukraine. During World War II, when the Germans invaded Ukraine, they and their two children, Maxim (b. 1939) and Anton (b. 1944) managed to escape, along with Afansy’s mother, Angelina. Eventually they reached the British zone in Germany and in 1947 were given the option to move to England permanently. Upon arrival they were placed in a UN camp for displaced persons in Bedhampton, Hampshire but soon settled permanently at 18 Northney Road, Hayling. Initially Nikolsky worked as a farm labourer at Northney Farm, but spent all his spare time sketching, eventually he was able to make a living as a painter and became most well known for his floral still lives and landscapes.
