Large decorative antique mounted Ammonite Fossil (Kranaosphinctes)

This extinct mollusk has a roughly circular form comprising of a rolled spiral shell with a ribbed pattern. The fossil has acquired a wonderful patina over hundreds of millions of years, and is a speckled sandy brown colour.

History ~
Jurassic Period (approx 200 - 145 million years ago), origin unknown. Ammonites used a sophisticated biological process to regulate their buoyancy in the water by using their tubular siphuncles as univalve chambers holding gas and liquid. The sea creature itself living only in the outermost compartment of its form.

Condition ~
Good antique condition, the specimen is intact and well preserved. The ribbing on the fossil is worn in places, but this does not detract from its aesthetic appeal as a decorative antique. It is later mounted on a strong iron rod with a rustic oak base. The fossil can be easily detached from the rod and mounting.
