Large antique French Walnut Oil Jar or Pot

This large antique ceramic Walnut Oil Jar or Pot is made in a spherical shape, from terracotta, with thick raised pattern detailing around its circumference (in order to enable it to be moved more easily when it was full of walnut oil) and four large lug handles. It has been finished in a wonderful green/brown drip glaze and is an impressive example of rustic pottery.

Condition ~ Wear to the glazing on the pot, one side has been exposed to the elements and the glaze has calcified, making it a different colour, and with a duller glaze. Drainage holes have been added to the pot at some time in the past. There are some old chips to the terracotta around the rim, as shown in the images and one chip underneath the base where a drainage hole was created, which can be seen in the last image. It is strong and sturdy and fit for purpose.
