A splendid antique oil painting on canvas, this gentleman is clearly an engaging character. Expertly painted - from the refined clothing and the detailing on the jacket to the nuances of the face – the strong facial features, distinctive sideburns and penetrating gaze. This is a very convincing portrait - we really get a sense of his personality; this gentleman is very much at ease with himself and has an air of confidence but also of good humour about him.
History ~
Circa 1840, Italy.
This is a portrait of Girolamo Luxardo (1784 – 1865). He was of noble descent and a famous Italian entrepreneur and diplomat who founded the Luxardo company, producing many fine liqueurs, most famous of which was the Maraschino liqueur. The company continues to this day as a family run business.
