Kuba cloth antique Cushion

A wonderful antique cushion made from Kuba cloth. In a geometric pattern using warm natural soft beige tones, within a darker zig-zag design and with a textured pile this antique cushion has many decorative qualities. 

History ~
Kuba cloth is made by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which was formerly Zaire. It specifically comes from the Kuba Kingdom, in the Kasai region of south-central Congo. The kingdom dates from the 17th century and was known for its sophisticated political and artistic culture. Textile production was a major part of this culture, Kuba cloth was used for clothing, ceremonial purposes, rituals such as burials and as a form of currency or a gift.

The cloth is made from raffia palm leaves, which are harvested, soaked, and beaten to soften before weaving. Men typically weave the base fabric using a single-peddle loom and women then embroider the surface with bold geometric designs using various techniques. Some are made into a cut-pile or velvet like cloth, such as this cushion, which is the most recognised form and produced for the elite society of Kuba. The whole process is labour-intensive, often taking weeks or months to complete.

Today Kuba cloth is highly sought after and admired. It is respected for its handwoven production techniques which have been passed down through the generations, and its part in the rich artistic tradition and culture of Africa.

Each cloth is unique, and their bold partly geometric designs with textured surfaces work well when made into antique cushions, matching well with traditional and mid-century antique furniture.

Condition ~ Good condition. The Kuba cloth has been professionally attached to a strong cotton inner layer. The reverse is made of hand dyed pure French linen in a warm cream colour, with a central concealed zip closure.

Measurements ~  When laid flat the cushion is 19" or 48 cm at the widest point and is filled with a 22"  feather pad.
