Griffin Smith & Hill majolica antique ceramic footed Serving Bowl or Dish
A charming majolica pottery compote, designed with high raised moulded daisy flower decorations in pink and yellow, offset with blue detailing, the inside also having a pretty pink glaze. With a similar design in miniature replicated on the base - all in all a very appealing antique ceramic.
History ~
Made by Griffen Simth & Hill, in USA, 1890 - 1910 - the largest and best known of the American majolica manufacturers, who were based in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. By 1879 they had begun producing majolica. Following Hill’s departure in 1880, the company was renamed Griffen, Smith and Company, although and the “H” in the firm’s monogram continued to be used and the original name is still used by collectors. The name “Etruscan” mirrored Wedgwood’s use of “Etruria” and reflected the archaeological discoveries of fine pottery around Rome. The firm expanded in 1885 and began producing other types of wares as the demand for majolica diminished.
