Greyhound oil on canvas, Herbert St John Jones
Oil on canvas of a striking greyhound, painted by Herbert St John Jones. Titled on the frame ‘Nance’ and verso a proper name or kennel club name of ‘Cleopatra’. Beautifully and sympathetically painted, Nance has a very characterful face.
History ~ Painted by Herbert St John Jones. A collectible artist, this painting is signed and dated bottom right hand side of the painting, and again verso, with the residence in Nantwich where the painting was created, dated 31 July 1929.
Herbert St John Jones was born in 1872 and spent most of his life in Nantwich, until his death in 1939. He is a renowned animal painter and was commissioned by many aristocratic clients to paint portraits of horses and dogs, including the Duke and Duchess of Westminster and King Edward VII.
Condition ~ Some areas of loss to the paint and craquelure, various repairs to the frame, which is original.
