Decorative antique heavy brass Dolphin Sculpture
A large and wonderfully decorative antique heavy brass dolphin sculpture. Cast as mythical creatures, with a wide sweeping tail, bold scales and a characterful face dolphins were classically known as symbols of prosperity, protection and abundance. The brass has mellowed over many years, giving the dolphin a soft and textured finish.
History ~
Early 1900s, England. Originally cast in two parts and possibly bolted onto the side of a ship, such as an Admirals barge - one section on the port side and the other on the starboard side. Since that time it has been welded together. There is an identical example at Stromness Museum in Scotland, retrieved from the ship 'Royal Oak' which sank in Scapa Flow in 1939.
