Augusta Asberry 'African Dancer' prints
A pair of distinctive high quality lithograph prints, featuring stylised figures dancing, by the renowned artist Augusta Asberry. The works are entitled - Left - 'Coral and Jade (Lady Dancing)' , right - 'African Gold'. Asberry has created a visually captivating experience for the viewer - each dancer seems so alive, fluidly moving and elegantly expressing herself, and yet the overall compositions are expertly balanced, with finely detailed drawing skills on show. Asberry has perhaps chosen to use dance as a means of symbolising a deeper concern with themes of freedom, joy and cultural expression.
History ~ Augusta Asberry (1931 - 2007) was born in Houston, Texas but then during World War II, her family moved to California to search of employment. Augusta was the first African American to attend Albany High School in Albany, California, graduating in 1948. Whilst there, she studied under the renowned artist Walter Keene. Her first career however was in nursing, which she successfully combined with raising her children. Eventually she returned to art and her professional career as a landscape painter officially began in 1971. Initially she preferred to work in pastels until 1992, when she first created the African Dancers.
She is quoted as saying “What I like about creating art is that I get to do what no one else can do. I alone get to interpret my ideas, visions and dreams and then present them on paper. To me this is the ultimate rush.”
Asberry’s work appears in numerous collections throughout the United States.
