Antique Zanzibar Chest

A wonderful decorative antique storage trunk, known as a Zanzibar chest. Made from teak, a tropical hardwood, which has acquired a deep warm colour and patina through years of use. The trunk is decorated in the traditional way - with brass studs and a geometric brass pierced plate design, offset against a central large brass clasp. Each side has a strong carrying handle. The bottom section of the trunk has three pull out drawers, each with their own handle. The reverse has its original vermilion coloured paint. Inside the hinged top is the original candle box compartment.

History ~
Today Zanzibar trunks are valued for their historical significance. They were originally used to store and transport valuable commodities, such as spice, gemstones and coins - some of which were dowery payments. These trunks would pass through major Asian ports such as Zanzibar and Bombay on their travels between Asia and Africa. This trunk dates from mid 1800s, and is Indian.

Good antique condition, some losses to the decorative brass work detailing.
