Antique Victorian lidded Cheese Dish by Powell, Bishop & Stonier from Oriental Ivory range
Wonderful large antique Victorian cheese dish with handle. Hand painted in a simple floral design with duck egg blue flowers and leaves, and resting on its original base.

History ~
Made by Powell, Bishop & Stonier, which was in production between 1878 - 1891. Edwin Powell was a potter, who had served his apprenticeship at Dimmocks of Hanley, Frederick Bishop was a lawyer who provided financial support for the company and John Stonier was a china and glass merchant in Liverpool, who employed around 400 people. In 1880, Powell, Bishop and Stonier registered a new trademark to accompany their ivory or cream coloured earthenware. This shows a seated Chinaman under a sunshade or umbrella and was called Oriental Ivory. This brand was an ideal vehicle for Japanese inspired designs which were popular at this time in the Victorian period. These designs often featured asymmetrical floral or bird designs, and the lidded Cheese Dish is typical of them. The partners Edwin Powell and Frederick Bishop died in 1890 and 1891 and a new partnership was formed which continued in various forms until the 1939, the factory did not reopen after the Second World War.

Condition ~
Good antique condition, no chips or cracks. One small spot of discolouration on the cheese dish base, which is shown in the images.
