Antique Victorian blue and white transfer rose pattern Serving Dish or Platter
A good quality antique blue and white transfer serving plate or platter, in the 'Wild Rose' pattern. The scene shows Nuneham Park, which is the home of Earl Harcourt t the left and a riverside cottage to the right, with two punts on the river in the foreground. On the reverse, printed in blue, is 'Wild Rose' with impressed lettering P W & C, for Podmore, Walker & Co, and the number 16.
History ~
The scene is based upon an engraving by W Cooke, which is after a drawing by S Owen, who was from the village of Nuneham Courtenay, in the Oxford area. The original engraving was published on 1 February 1811.
Podmore, Walker & Co, who produced the dish, operated between 1834 and 1856 in various locations in Tunstall.
Condition ~
The front is in good antique condition, with few scratches. On the reverse there is a small chip, shown in the images, which is not visible from the front.
