Striking and pleasing, slightly surreal impressionist style oil on canvas showing many different Pekingese dogs curled up together in amongst swirling pink flowers and turquoise decorations. A very memorable and appealing painting.
History ~ Signed and dated front left, 1943. Esther Ellerman (1910 - 84) was married to Sir John Reeves Ellerman, who was heir to the Ellerman Lines Shipping company, and was one of the richest men in the world. Signed using her familiar monogram E de S, from her pseudonym, Ellen de Streuve. Hand written reference to the title of the painting 'Pekingese Pattern' verso and label from framers, James Bourlet & Sons, London fine art specialists.
Condition ~ Original frame, which has had some minor repairs.
