Antique Japanese Imari Porcelain Plate

A decorative antique ceramic Imari plate made from porcelain, with a scalloped or fluted edge and a slightly raised foot.  Hand painted with a strong palette using traditional underglaze of cobalt blue, which is offset by an overglaze of vibrant rich blue and bold orange.  This central motif of a flowering plant is framed by floral decorations in identical colours with delicate pink and green plant detailing - which makes up the outer border. 

History ~
Circa 1880 – 1900, Japan.
The port of Imari in Kyushu, in the Arita region of Japan, started exporting porcelain to Europe in the mid 1600s.  By the Meiji period - (1868–1912) Japanese Imari was highly sought after across Europe, desired for its bold colouring and decorative appeal. Plates such as this were produced both for export and for the domestic market, often in traditional patterns inspired by earlier Edo period designs.

Condition ~
Good antique condition, no cracks or chips.  Minor surface wear to the enamels and light kiln or glaze irregularities typical of hand-painted porcelain.
