Antique Georgian child's Correction or Training faux bamboo Chair
A charming antique child’s correction or training chair, with turned uprights with a faux bamboo ladder back. This chair has a beautiful shape and good proportions and colour.
History ~
These chairs were invented by Sir Astley Paston Cooper (1768 – 1841). He was a surgeon and anatomist and designed the chairs with the intention of improving deportment and of helping to correct poor posture in children. This was because the design of the chair forces a child to keep their back straight and consequently their heads in an upright position. These chairs were also used to maintain discipline and could be found in nurseries and classrooms. Being forced to sit on such a chair for any length of time would be uncomfortable and any fidgeting would result in falling off the small seats.
Condition ~
Good antique condition, with wear to the footrest, as expected.
