Antique embroidery beaded British Regimental Souvenir Sweetheart Pin Cushion

An antique textile pin cushion, made in a heart shape.  Richly embellished with antique embroidery and glass beads in an 'evil eye' design, which was a common symbol in the Eastern Mediterranean and in Egypt.   The pin cushion also features symmetrical decorative panels with a Union Jack and tricolour flags.  At the center is an emblem featuring a crowned insignia with a mounted figure and mottoes.   All the details are symbolic motifs associated with British imperial and military culture and there is also a popular sentimental poem.

History ~
Late Victorian or Edwardian - 1880 - 1910, England.
These pin cushions were made by soldiers whilst on overseas postings, or by local artisans to sell to soldiers. This pin cushion commemorates service with The Queen's Royal Regiment of West Sussex, which is one of the oldest regiments in the British Army.  The central printed paper medallion reproduces British military regimental symbolism with royal associations, including the Latin motto "Pristina Virtutis Memor" - "Mindful of Former Valour" and "Vel Exuviae Triumphant" - "Triumphant even in adversity" .  The inclusion of a Sphinx with the word "Egypt" confirms participation in late 19th or early 20th century Egyptian campaigns.  Today such pin cushions are an important part of military memorabilia.  However these pin cushions were also personal souvenirs and keepsakes by soldiers who may have been on active service and who wanted to send a commemorative gift to their love ones.  They represent a powerful mix of sentimental and personal emotion combined with military culture, as the antique embroidery verse shows -

Condition ~
Excellent antique condition, only very light signs of use or wear.
