Antique Doulton Lambeth silicon stoneware Jug
An attractive stoneware jug, in a soft putty colour with a distinctive symmetrical band of raised decoration around the base, middle and top, which is in several shades of soft cornflower blue.
History ~
Dated 1884 and decorated by Alice ME Barker at Doulton Lambeth. It is part of a range of what was known as ‘Silicon Ware’, distinguished by a hard high-fired stoneware, typically produced in similar shades of brown and blue and covered in a flat matt glaze whichis known as ‘smear’.
Royal Doulton was founded in 1815, originally based in London, first at Vauxhall and then Lambeth. In 1882 it opened a factory in the Potteries, at Burlslem, Stoke-on-Trent, from where this jug was produced.
Condition ~
Good antique condition, the jug has acquired a good patina, some wear from usage to the handle, no chips or cracks.
