Antique Ault majolica Jardiniere

Wonderful vibrant yellow and green jardiniere with a raised floral design in bright yellow and green, with the Ault Pottery mark and impressed numbers.

History ~

William Ault (born 1842) started work at Henry Wileman's pottery in Longton as a packing boy but worked his way up to warehouse manager and then manager of their factory at Church Gresley. Originally he went into partnership with Henry Tooth, setting up Bretby Pottery at Woodville and then in 1887 he formed the Ault Pottery company at Swadlincote. In 1890 Ault bought many of the moulds from the closure of the Linthorpe Pottery, including many of Dr Christopher Dresser’s designs. Between 1892 and 1900 Dresser also designed for Ault, and his designs continued in production after this contract ended. However Ault also developed his own style of ornamental pottery with much of the artwork completed by his daughters, Clarissa and Gertrude, often based on Linthorpe designs. Ault opened showrooms in London and exhibited at the international trade shows, winning many prizes for quality and originality, until his retirement in 1922, when the company merged and became Ault and Tuncliffe.
