Antique Art Deco green Lloyd Loom Sofa and 4 Chairs, including 2 Zepplin models
A rare set of four matching early Lustys Lloyd Loom chairs and sofa conservatory seats, characterised by a smart Art Deco design with accentuated angles and long cane work almost down to the ground in wonderful worn green paint.
History ~
All the seats were produced in 1930s, including the pair of iconic Model 32 Zeppelin chairs, one of which is stamped ‘WL&S’, for W Lusty and Sons, (the company name before it became known as Lloyd Loom), and is dated 1939. It has a second stamp with the Royal Crown and 'A M' for Air Ministry. Popular during World War II with RAF pilots these chairs were large and comfortable to sit in whilst pilots were waiting in aerodromes wearing their thick and bulky flying combat leathers.
Originally these chairs were designed as state of the art seating for Zeppelin airships, which needed lightweight furniture to aid their aerodynamics and in which passengers needed to wear warm clothes, as Zeppelins were notoriously cold.
All the seats have been recovered in matching original 1940s fabric, which was new and unused.
Condition ~ Some small areas of loss to the cane work. There is one area towards the base of a chair where the cane work is slightly misshapen. There is one replacement bracket underneath the base of one chair. There are original 'automobile type' drop in cushions on the sofa and one set of chairs, the springs are in excellent condition. The other set of chairs has foam cushions. All the seats have been recovered in a matching original 1940s upholstery fabric, which is new and unused.
