Antique early Victorian needlework embroidery panel or tapestry showing a young man sitting beneath a tree with his resting dog at his feet, in its original mahogany frame and gilt slip. Originally made as a commemorative textile with a stitched inscription running along the lower horizontal margin of the work which reads - "M Smith, Ambaston, Aged 12, October 8 1858". Such personal detail adds to the panel's authenticity and desirability by providing an historical context and provenance.

Needlepoint was a popular pastime during the Victorian era when ladies would use wool or silk threads to reimagine historical scenes. Pastoral compositions were particularly popular within Victorian domestic needlework, with romantic and sentimental themes being favoured.
