A pair of antique oak Gothic Revival Glastonbury chairs
£ 620.00
A pair of decorative and iconic chairs with a distinctive and geometric design. With many strong features – such as the use of three spaced trefoils along the top of the backrest and a trefoil bracketed joint on either side. Also of note are the accentuated pegged joints and distinctive X frame design to the base, which is secured by a central turned stretcher. Made from oak, which has acquired a good mellow patina over time, these chairs are good examples of the Gothic Revival era of design.
History ~
Early 1900s, England.
Glastonbury chairs derive their name from the Medieval chair at Glastonbury Abbey which was famous before Henry VIII authorised the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Condition ~
Good antique condition, light signs of wear and marks to the oak, as expected.
