19th century antique rustic pottery Confit pot

Good shape and colour to this decorative confit pot with its honey coloured yellow glaze.
Wonderful patina to the terracotta, acquired over many years and generations of use, with
a distinctive red hue - rustic simplicity and centuries of history make these pots such special
antique ceramics. A great deal of character that is impossible to replicate.

History ~
19th century. Used for many centuries in French kitchens the Confit Pot was originally used
to preserve duck and goose. Confit is from the French word “confire” which means “to
preserve” and before refrigeration, they were an essential part of daily life in the kitchen.
Originally the meat would have been salted and cooked in its own fat, giving it a protective
layer and then it was stored in a confit pot, which was placed in earth to aid the
preservation process.

Condition ~
Good antique condition, lots of visible wear, strong and sturdy, no chips or cracks. There is
an original hole in the base.
