19th century antique Normandy Marriage Box painted with folk art birds
Large decorative dome topped 'coffre de mariage' wedding box. Constructed in wood with beautiful naive original painting showing swags and birds, lovely subtle colours, all original and very pretty drawings and paintwork.
History ~ From Normandy, North West France, marriage boxes were presented as part of a bride's dowry. Circa 1840.
Condition ~ Various signs of wear and usage, marks and indentations to the original paintwork, the handle from the dome top and a section of the lock are missing and the hinges have been replaced at some point in the past. Overall the box is solid and substantial.
