19th century antique embroidery Needlework Sampler, 1852, Ann Clarke

A large decorative antique early Victorian sampler, this antique textile is profusely embroidered with intricate baskets of flowers, trees, shrubs, birds and peacocks. It has been emboridered using a set of lovely soft complimentary colours, onto fine piece of ecru linen. It is elegantly framed with its original scrumble glaze finish with a gilt inner edge.

It has a central poem ~
Thou art a light for young and old
To lead them in the way
Thou art a guide their steps to hold
Lest they should go astray
Flee to Jesus flee away
Not tomorrow come to day
Come this moment for to the
The next may be Eternity.

It was embroidered by Ann Clarke, aged 11 years and finished on 13 October 1852.

Condition ~
Original antique condition, some wear to the frame and tarnishing to the inner gilt edge, some fraying to the linen.
