19th century antique ebonised bobbin turned Canterbury or Magazine Rack
Smart bobbin turned 'Canterbury' or magazine rack. The frame is designed with bobbin turned crossbars, resting on spindle legs, a good design and proportions, with original ebonised paint and original small delicate castors.
History ~ Circa 1860, England.
These antique magazine racks have been known as Canterbury’s since the late 1700s, when the first one was commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury, in order to store music sheets. The Canterbury became ever more popular with the Victorians, when bobbin turning was a highly respected skill used by craftsmen to show their expertise.
Condition ~ Good overall antique condition, some fading and light marks to the ebonised wood, as expected. On one side the paint has scuff marks in places, please see images.
