A rustic antique pine settle with a tall plank back, formed from solid pine boards, with two gently curved side supports and a single full-length seat with a central divider for support. With good proportions this settle is not too high and has a gently graduated barrel back design. It has honest country character and is a good example of vernacular antique furniture from this time. The pine has a wonderful naturally surface which has matured to a rich and warm honey-brown patina. There are grain knots and minor surface age related marks from many years of use, which only add to its authenticity and charm.

The settle is one of the oldest forms of bench seating in Northern Europe, dating back to the medieval period. By the 19th century pine settles had become common place in many rural homes – they provided seating for several people at one time and were useful as protection from drafts when placed near doors. Pine was a popular choice in the countryside - it was readily available to local artisans, joiners and farmers and inexpensive compared to other woods.
