19th century antique ceramic Staffordshire figures - 'Going to Market' & 'Returning Home'
A pair of charming earthenware Staffordshire figures, each one showing a young couple riding on a horse, the first with the caption "Going to Market", and the second "Returning Home". Such antique ceramic figures are a wonderful insight into 19th century everyday rural agricultural life, which was a frequent source of inspiration used by the Staffordshire Potteries and incorporated into their designs. Produced using a mould, which was then hand painted, the figures are brightly decorated and full of life.
