'The First Steeple Chase on Record' - set of 4 early edition etched aquatints

'The First Steeple Chase on Record' - plates I - IV. A wonderfully atmospheric set of etchings with aquatint, which have been hand coloured in warm tones, retaining their original vibrancy. An anomaly of this early edition, which makes it particularly sought after by collectors, is on Plate III. The shadow of the rider does not break the shadow of the five-bar gate, in later impressions this was amended.
The four compositions are based on the drawings of Henry Thomas Alken. Each numbered plate is titled and annotated:-
Plate One ~ Ipswich, the watering place behind the barracks.
Plate Two ~ The large field near Bile's corner.
Plate Three ~ The last field near Nacton Heath.
Plate Four ~ Nacton Chuch & Village.
History ~ Produced by John Harris III, and first published in March 1839 by Ben Brooks at his Eclipse Sporting Gallery, in Oxford.
Condition ~ There is some foxing and time related marks and light crinkling to the paper, but it does not detract from the overall appeal of the plates. Each one is in a simple oak frame, made by Green & Stone, King's Road, Chelsea in 1930s or 40s (Gallery label verso).
